Under attack

Bible-bashing has so vastly developed today that even the believers themselves are beginning to have doubt. The authenticity and inspiration of the Scriptures is under attack from all over the planet.

Journalist Bill Moyers had this to say. “The bible is the book of fairy tales. Bible believers have a neurological disorder.” And Ted Turner claims that Christianity is a religion for weaklings and people who are mentally deranged.  Many of us have seen the  borderline hatred that Bill Maher puts out on a regular basis toward  Christianity and his view of organized religion.

How can we know that the Bible is really the Word of God?   No one living today actually eye-witnessed the writings of the Scriptures so what forms of evidence can we use?

How do we know what the bible says is what it said in the first century? More importantly, how do we respond to the questions and accusations of those non believers? In 1 Peter 3:15, it says, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”   I love this verse because it removes the opportunity for excuses.  We are accountable to answer for our beliefs.

When someone says the Bible is contradictory, request examples of them. Most likely they cannot, because most people who deny the Bible have never studied it or are simply repeating what they have heard from someone else.

There are two questions that need to be asked.

1. Is the Bible today reliable?

Since we no longer have the original copies , how can we be certain of the accuracy or our current copies?

What about the gospel of Judas or the gospel of Thomas? Some people claim that there are as many as 30 gospels, but only four were included in the bible due to political pressure.

Yes, there are 30 books that some claim to be gospels, but only four were written in the first century. The Apostles and all the witnesses were long gone before the other books were written.

2. Is the Bible the word of God?

The most powerful proof that the Bible is the Word of God would be the myriads of  fulfilled prophecies. There are four criteria to qualify fulfilled prophecy.

1: It can be proved that it was written before the occurrence.

2: A large time gap took place between the prophecy and the time it happened.

3: It was something that was extraordinary and highly unlikely to happen.

4: It was impossible for the person making the prophecy to manipulate the event.

The book of Mormon made multiple prophecies, but the majority occurred before 1830 when the book came into existence. But what about the prophecies of the future?

In 1836, they predicted that the coming of the Lord would happen within 36 years. We are still waiting…somewhat patiently.  In 1838, they predicted that David W. Patten would go on a great mission for God, but he entered eternity six months later before he even left the country.

What about the Koran? There are many prophecies in the Koran about the end of time which have not been fulfilled.

That brings us to the Bible. In Isa 44:28, it says, “That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.”

This was given 125 years before the temple was even destroyed. Cyrus was not even born yet. However,  Cyrus was called out by name to rebuild the temple. This was too far from the prophecy to even possibly manipulate.

There are over 400 fulfilled prophecies about the life, death, and burial of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, but let us consider just eight.

The statistical probabilities of just eight of the fulfilled prophecies of Jesus is over ten to the seventeenth power to one. What does that mean to us?

If you were to cover the entire land surface of the earth with one and a half inch square tiles and paint the bottom of one tile red, the odds of someone picking up that one tile on the first try has about the same odds.

When someone questions your faith, hopefully this can help you respond in a language that they understand.

I will do followups to this one..

Commitment

We had a children’s program at our Church yesterday.  Of course, the kids were outstanding as always.  Afterwards, our Pastor said a few words and some of them really hit home as to a level of commitment.  How committed are we in raising our children in this society?  The thought that drove it home as I sat there and wandered off on my own thoughts is what would happen in our society if we as Christians were as committed to raising our children for the Lord as Satan is committed in the prevention of that cause?

* Relentless

* Passionate

* Motivated

* Persistent

Are we?  Am I?

One of those food for thought moments…

Welcome

Welcome to my blog.  This first post will be quite simple if for nothing more than to provide focus and direction to what I am desiring to accomplish with this site.  As a general rule of focus, there may be little or no direction.  That will be the fun of this and is a rather defining characteristic of a blog.  A person can talk about what they wish, in whatever manner they wish, and to what extent they wish to.

Why choose the word “layman”?  Just a formal word for ordinary Christian and is shorter.  Long domain names don’t really do well so “layman” keeps it short and gets the point across.

What will I post about?  Anything and everything that comes to my mind as relating to politics, current events, sports, books, marketing products, music, etc.  Again, that is the beauty of a blog.  I can address anything that pops into my head.  I will strive to be informative and inflammatory.  Revealing and reflective.  Descriptive and debunking.  Insensitive and incendiary?  Yeah, probably some of that as well.  I will be developing other sites over time and this will simply be the opening hub.

Just my random thoughts.

Enjoy,

-D
